Co-op to convert all own brand tea, coffee and chocolate to Fairtrade

Friday, February 8th, 2008

A recent poll revealed that 100,000 members of the Co-operative Group listed ethical trading, animal welfare and the environment as the major concerns when shopping.  This has encouraged the Co-operative to act quickly and has announced that it will be converting all of its own brand tea, coffee and the rest of its chocolate ranges to Fairtrade.

Further more it has banned the sale of eggs from caged hens, added 66 pesticides to its prohibited list and pledged to reduce the weight of wine packaging reportedly saving 450 tonnes of glass annually.

Ethical consumerism into the mainstream

Friday, February 8th, 2008

PG Tips are the next to follow in a bid to help with environmental concerns its products may have on the planet.  The company has announced that now 50% of its tea comes from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms and that by 2010 all of its tea will be bought through these farms.

The Rainforest Alliance works with and helps farmers who are using sustainable practices to grow there produce.  There are standards to be met and complied with and in return the farmers receive at least minimum wage, dignified housing and medial care for workers and their families and free education for their children.
